Our Mission, Values and Honour Code

Bishop Bavin School’s mission is to motivate our children to achieve all their goals and we endeavour to provide our learners with the ability and desire to be the positive difference that our current world needs.

Knowledge is power’. This clever bit of insight is not a modern fad, it is at least 440 years old, formulated by philosopher Francis Bacon during the Enlightenment. We celebrate our learners and educators at Bishop Bavin, who work together diligently to ensure that education is still ‘hip and happening’! Teaching never ends at 14h10, and any day of the week and at any time, you will find our learners being extended in some way or another. Our Academic Programme can be summed up, with the words of former professional basketball player, ‘I’m not telling you it’s going to be easy, I’m telling you it’s going to be worth it.’

Faith is important in the life of the school and this is symbolized by the centrality of the chapel on the school’s campus. The services in the chapel also provide a pivot around which much of the weekly life of the school is balanced. All the children in the Junior School have an opportunity to come together for chapel worship once a week. The Prep and College students attend Mass every alternate week on Wednesdays.

The cultural ambit of the school is alive and well at Bishop Bavin. Most of our children are involved in one way or another in our very busy cultural programme. We do a number of Olympiads, we participate in Public Speaking and the Eisteddfod which are all external competitions. Bishop Bavin School was also the initiator of the inaugural Southern African World Scholar’s Cup – an international Debating and Public Speaking competition. We also produce numerous stage productions and encourage our children to participate in choir, our music academy and various other exciting activities.

Bishop Bavin School has a sports programme which caters for all children. We believe that sports is the best way to learn life lessons which are not always provided in the classroom. Our main aim is to ignite a passion for sport and to ensure that our children live a balanced and healthy lifestyle which includes exercise. We have a strong and dedicated coaching team and our athletes are often awarded with National or provincial colours. A final thought to all participants: every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday’s success and put its failures behind you. Always play the game to the best of your ability!

We are pleased to be one of very few schools who offer such a variety of boarding options. Our boarders are divided into girls and boys, seniors (8-12) and juniors (4-7). We also offer the option of weekly or full boarding. The boarders are well taken care of with in-house and residential staff members and there is no doubt that they are receiving both emotional and educational support. Choosing to have your child in boarding is a big decision, but parents can rest at ease knowing that with the competent staff we have your children are loved, supported and well taken care of.
