Dear Parents and Guardians

APPOINTMENT OF HEADMASTER OF THE PREPARATORY SCHOOL

At the beginning of this year I advised you that Mr. Owen Thomas would be retiring at the end of this year. The process to appoint a successor ran over the course of the Easter Term. I was delighted by the number and high calibre of applications we received for the role and, together with a sub-committee appointed by the board, we have made an appointment.

It is with great pleasure that I am able to announce the appointment of Mr. Wayne Stuurman as Headmaster of the Preparatory School with effect from January 2019.

Mr. Stuurman was educated at Mount Edmund – CBC in Pretoria, and holds a B.A. (Human Movement Sciences) degree from Stellenbosch University and a Post-graduate Certificate in Education from UNISA. He also holds a B.A. (Health and Social Sciences) degree, specialising in psychological counselling from UNISA.

Having played professional cricket for the Northerns Cricket and been involved in cricket development and coaching, in 2003 he then moved into full-time teaching, first at St. Peter’s Boys’ Preparatory School in Rivonia. There he taught Mathematics, Afrikaans, Social and Natural Sciences, Phys. Ed. and Art across grades 3 to 7, coached numerous sports, directed a few major musical productions, co-ordinated chess and was responsible for leadership development. He was a housemaster for four years and grade head for two years. From 2012 he was Head of Department: Afrikaans and Grade Co-ordinator at The Ridge School in Westcliff, where he also coached sport and was a housemaster responsible for the general welfare, discipline and well-being of the boys.

Since 2014 he has taught at Marist Brothers Linmeyer, where he is currently Head of Department: Senior Primary. He is responsible for the entire Intersen phase (grades 4 to 7), including academics, curriculum development, staff development and appraisals, extra-murals, recruitment and discipline.

Mr Stuurman is a devout Christian and is a warm, caring and nurturing person whom we feel will be ideally suited to Bishop Bavin’s family culture. He is passionate about pastoral care of children, the development of thinking skills and teaching and learning to suit the twenty-first century, staff development, growth and communication. Above all, he is committed to a philosophy of balanced education comprising academic, emotional, spiritual, cultural and sporting development. He comes with very strong references from previous colleagues and heads. He is single, and has recently become engaged to be married. In his spare time, he is a keen golfer and avid mountain climber, having already scaled four of the seven highest summits on each continent.

Mr. Stuurman will begin meeting with members of the management team and will be introduced to staff over the next few months, and will be formally introduced to parents at an appropriate time towards the end of the year.

I am sure you will all join me in welcoming him into the Bishop Bavin community; I have no doubt that he will play an invaluable role in building on the foundations laid by Mr. Thomas, in integrating grades 1 to 3 into the Prep School, and in leading the new Prep School forward in the years to come.

Yours faithfully
Alistair Dry
